🏆 TOO MUCH PRAISE?

"I have to celebrate you, baby

I have to praise you like I should"

Praise You by Fatboy Slim (Mike and I entered our wedding reception to this song 😄)

Hi Reader!

During my livestream yesterday, I got this question: My child (age 5, kindergarten) wants constant affirmation for the smallest things. How much is too much and how can I show him he needs to do hard work to get praise?

  • Rephrase the praise: Praise is good, but to a child looking for affirmation it can be like an addiction. Rephrase it to say thank you for the small things. It models manners and gratitude.
  • Build Confidence: Yes it's nice getting a compliment, but long term it feels a lot better to be proud of yourself. You can model this by saying positive things out loud to yourself. "I worked hard on that and I'm proud of it," or "When I put my things away I feel good." The book I Can Do Hard Things is a great resource for this.
  • It's a phase: On some level here, it's a part of their development. Children 7 and under want affirmation from the adults around them. Around the age of 8, their focus shifts to peers. No matter how much you work on this, on some level they will want your praise. You mean everything to them 💕

What's New?

⛰️ Help WNC: Last week, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. Entire towns were destroyed by floodwater and hundreds of people are still missing. Many major roads (including I-40) have been washed out. Please consider donating to Operation Airdrop or donating blood.

🧁 Early Access Birthday Sale: My birthday is this week 🎉 I'm celebrating by throwing a birthday sale! Save $50 on the Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten Course using this link and save $21 on check in calls.

Things I Love

✏️ Writing: Writing is one of the hardest subjects to teach. Half the battle is that kids are asked to write about things they don't want to. This cute book of writing prompts is great to get your 8-12 year old inspired.

💄 A compromise: If you have a skincare/makeup obsessed tween, this lipgloss is nourishing, barely tinted, and a viral hit. They've come out with a gift set with 4 mini versions. Perfect for a special treat or early holiday gift.

🥳 HBD to me! I've been slowly replacing my makeup brushes with the Sephora collection. It started with this powder brush and eyeshadow brush I got 6 months ago. It's so soft and extremely high quality! I think I'll get myself a blush brush next.

Be good to yourself- you deserve it 💕
