Hi Reader,

Why Don’t Kids Skip Grades Anymore?

It’s not that it never happens...
But it’s much rarer than it used to be. Here’s why:

  • School is about more than just academics
Emotional maturity matters just as much as reading level. It's important we give kids a safe place to learn before we send them off into the real world.
  • Friendship + social skills = critical learning
Moving ahead can disrupt peer relationships and confidence

So why not skip if they’re ahead?
A 2016 report from Johns Hopkins found:

“Between 15% and 45% of students enter the late-elementary classroom each fall already performing at least one year ahead of expectations.”

That’s a wide range—but still staggering.
➡️ About 1 in 3 kids may already be ready for the next grade.
➡️ Yet only about 1% ever skip - In fact in my 10 years teaching, I've only ever known about one child skipping a grade, and it was a very long process to get approved.

Why?
Because today’s schools focus on in class accommodations and long-term development.

  • Challenging work doesn’t have to mean skipping a grade
Teachers provide enrichment, deeper thinking, and flexible groups meet kids where they are
  • Older students have more options
In middle and high school, kids can take advanced math, AP courses, and more
✏️ Based on ability, not age
✏️ Without rushing through school...Because do you really want a 17 year old doctor to be working on you?

The goal?
To Raise confident, capable learners who are college and career ready—not just quick finishers.

What do you think about kids skipping grades?

What's New?

Things I Love

đź©» Women in Medicine: I'm so proud of my friend Chaundria for publishing her children's book Rachel the Radiographer She realized that she never saw an example of black women in her field growing up. Chaun decided to write this book to introduce children to this great career and raise money for her scholarship program.

🎀 The New Claw Clip: I love a claw clip but they are really annoying to wear in the car and don't always look nice. I tried Kaxi's lay down clip and I'm hooked! I have super thick hair, so usually these products don't work, but the oversized lay down claw kept my hair up all day. Use this link to get $10 off your first purchase of $20 or more.

đź‘– Spring Sale: American Eagle's spring sale is still going on with a ton of pants and shorts marked down to 29.99 I love how easy it is to read their site to get the right fit.

Thanks for reading this- it means a lot. I hope you have a really wonderful evening đź’•
