🫠 Homework is ruining our life

What do you think about homework Reader?

Homework has always been a controversial topic. Some camps want to pile on as much as possible. Other camps think it is unfair and should be banned completely.

The fact is, the amount of homework your child has will vary greatly by the school, and even down to the teacher your child has.

But when it comes to homework policies, it feels like parents get left out of the conversation.

So what should you do when it's all too much?

A common complaint I hear in consulting calls is that enormous homework loads are hurting your family's quality of life. And I agree! It's terrible to hear a child getting 2-3 hours of homework a night.

So what should you do?

  • 😉 read between the lines: Refer back to class manuals, the school handbook, etc to see what the school's homework policy is. Look specifically to see if homework completion is part of your child's grade. Your teacher may be hesitant to tell you your child doesn't have to do homework, so your answer could lie in the official policy.
  • 📝 audit your child: Observe your child's behavior during homework time. Are they truly working, or goofing around? Are they burning out by completing all the easy things first?
  • 🍎 reach out: Email the teacher and explain how difficult it is to get homework done. Ask what the bare minimum is, ask if due dates can be extended, and any other work arounds to reduce the load. Be sure to mention you've been working on solutions at home.

Is this email feeling too close to home? Let's work together to solve the problem. Respond to this email to set up a consult call. Things I Love (contains affiliate links)

🐯 Fascinating: I've been reading 1,000 Amazing Weird Facts with my third grade tutoring students. It's so interesting! Young children will love the pictures and kids about 9+ should be able to read it.

💄 favorite foundation: Lucky me, my foundation just ran out and its 20% off at Nordstrom right now! This foundation hydrates my skin, includes SPF, and never makes me break out. I wear the shade ivory.

🚰 It worked!: I mentioned a few weeks ago that we had a drip under our sink. I used clear bins to reorganize. I was able to fit several medium sized bins under the sink. I also put this under the sink to absorb moisture. I used to put them around my classroom over summer break to prevent mildew when the AC was off. Game changer!

Consult calls are on sale right now! Respond to this email to book yours. I'm here to answer your questions 💕

"I have to celebrate you, baby I have to praise you like I should" Praise You by Fatboy Slim (Mike and I entered our wedding reception to this song 😄) Hi Reader! During my livestream yesterday, I got this question: My child (age 5, kindergarten) wants constant affirmation for the smallest things. How much is too much and how can I show him he needs to do hard work to get praise? Rephrase the praise: Praise is good, but to a child looking for affirmation it can be like an addiction. Rephrase...

"The things I was taught only took me so far, had to figure the rest out for myself" Deeper Well by Kacey Musgraves Hi Reader! I was inspired by a recent article by Gene Fashaw on EdSurge on using a growth mindset to help students with math. I connected with it because as a child I deeply believed I was naturally bad at math. It wasn't until I went to college to study education that I realized some misconceptions in elementary school prevented me from excelling in math. I don't want the next...
