Schools & Styles: What's Best for Your Child?

Stop making me read between the lines"

Man I Need by Olivia Dean

Hello Reader,

There are so many different approaches to teaching. There are endless styles of schooling to guide learners to be knowledgable, curious, responsible, leaders in the classroom.

Though each style from Montessori to IB claim they are the best, the truth is, there's no one perfect way to learn. Teaching is a science- and so far we have more theories on best practice than facts.

Since this is school application season, I thought I'd give you some pointers on the various styles of schools and the kids that thrive in them...and those that may need a different approach.

And if you're narrowing down between schools, book the School Choice call to figure out the best option.

I want your input on this too! Respond to this email with your experience and opinions on these schools. I'll share more next week.

Montessori Schools

Montessori has a child-focused approach that emphasizes hands-on learning, self-paced activities, and multi-age classrooms.

โœ… A great fit: children that are naturally curious, self-guided, confident, and mostly well behaved

โŒ Think twice: children that need a lot of affirmation, are unmotivated, and like a stable routine driven environment

Dual Language

Dual language schools (Also Bilingual, Immersion Schools, etc) teach children to speak two languages- usually their native tongue and one other. A personal favorite of mine, these schools take extra commitment from families since homework can be a head scratcher at times.

โœ… A great fit: children that love school, globally minded, academically inclined, or motivated to learn the language to communicate with loved ones,

BONUS- if you're looking for an excuse to take that big family vacation to a foreign country

โŒ Think twice: children that are overwhelmed by challenges, new settings, or are struggling academically

House System

House systems have become increasingly popular in the United States. This is not a curriculum, but rather a student culture system. Any school could adopt a house system. Students are randomly divided into 4 houses (Think Harry Potter without the magic #BigHufflepuffEnergy). All year students earn points for good deeds, good grades, and from friendly competitions. Wildly popular with students, the house system can transform a school's culture, but it's not perfect for all students.

โœ… A great fit: children that need more encouragement + motivation to love school, children motivated by friendly competition, young leaders

BONUS- for parents that like to volunteer!

โŒ Think twice: children that hate competition or can't handle it,* children overwhelmed by big group settings

(*note- many rising kindergartners developmentally can't handle competition, so don't let that deter you. it's a skill!)

So what do you think? Have you had experience with one of these schools? Are you considering enrolling? Respond to this email to share your thoughts!
