Hi Reader,

A few months ago I wrote about technology in schools (full article here). I explained that schools have been heavily investing in tech since 2010 in an effort to get the best programs, 1:1 devices, and train kids to be cutting edge

But we have reached the point where we are wondering if tech is causing our problems. New reports theorize that technology is the very reason why test scores are plummeting. And now we are seeing parents fight back and districts make changes.

In a surprising turn of events, LAUSD the second largest district in the country, announced they will BAN screens for students in K-1 and heavily limit it in other grades. Here are the new recommendations:

  • A limit of zero minutes per day for early education through first grade
  • A limit of zero to 20 minutes per day for second and third grade
  • A limit of zero to 30 minutes per day for fourth and fifth grade
  • Recommended 60-120 minutes per day for sixth through eighth grade
  • Recommended 90-180 minutes per day for ninth through 12th grade

Popular learning program iReady (an estimated 1/3 of Americans students use iReady) is in hot water too. School districts across the country are fielding complaints from students, teachers, and parents. Claiming they have traded precious hours learning each week to the program. It's looking like iReady may start losing contracts.

🧜‍♀️ Dive into this series: I stumbled upon this adorable series for kids. Emily Windsnap finds out she is half human and half mermaid. In their imaginative books, Emily explores each world. The best part is, Emily and her friends are pretty diverse- perfect to prove the point not all mermaids are Danish. Emily Windsnap Chapter Books (ages 8-12) and The World of Emily Windsnap Picture Books (ages 5-8)
