Waka Waka by Shakira (The BEST World Cup Song!)

Hi Reader,

The World Cup starts next week- June 11! This time the games are in North America (across Mexico, The US, and Canada) so you can easily watch them live.

But don't stop there!

It is SO EASY to jump on learning opportunities from the world cup. Here's a few ideas:

🌎 Geography: As you watch, locate countries on the map. Ask your child to observe what continent it's on, bordering countries, its capital city, and landmarks like seas or mountain ranges. These mats are great to use dry erase markers to identify each country.

🌍 Flags: You'll see each country's flag & colors displayed prominently. The World Flag Book is a kids' favorite to learn the meaning behind each flag.

🌏 Culture + Language: Research how to say hello or count to five in different languages.

🌎 Passing a Ball: Get a soccer ball and spend some time learning how to pass. Start small, and see over a week or two how far you can get away from each other. I love soccer because you don't need special gear to play- just a ball and flat space.

🌍 Soccer Tricks: For a more skilled kiddo- start working on soccer tricks! You can do this with a regular sized ball or to touch on the hacky sack craze with a mini soccer ball. This is far beyond my skillset, but this video has some good tutorials!

🌱 Toiling I've been spending my evenings toiling in my rooftop garden. I've gardening on and off for years, but this year things feel really productive. I have officially transitioned to my summer garden with tomato, sweet potto, cucumber, bell pepper, chard, and strawberries. I have The Patio Farmer to thank for helping me make my hostile rooftop a lush place that plants want to grow.

👖 Marked Way Down: My fav shorts are marked alllllllllll the way down- between $17-30 depending on the color. I've had mine a few years and am stocking up on more.

☀️ Stay off the Screen: One of my tutoring buddies (2nd grade) has this drawing book. It teaches how to draw cartoonish versions of everyday objects. Simple enough to try on their own, and her drawings are pretty good!
