I remember when I was in 5th grade and I got my first C.

Progress reports were sent home, and after years of being an A / B student, my math grade had slipped.

When I got home, I ran up to my room, shut the door, and slipped the carbon copy paper out of my folder.

I got a "C" in math. What was I going to do? My family could never find out about this.

I grabbed a pen and starting practicing my mom's signature. And then...

How to Handle Bad Grades:

1. What PATTERNS are you seeing? Hindsight is 20/20- was there a trail leading up to this slip in grades? Get to the root of it. Maybe it's time for a tutor, maybe you need to take over homework time, or maybe they don't understand why grades are important.
2. What's the LESSON you want to teach? Your messaging is important. Make sure your messaging serves your child. Not all kids will get straight A's. Don't forget to reward growth, consistency, and trying your best.
3. What will make them FEEL GOOD? Academic struggles connect with a child's personal beliefs about their self worth and capability. If school is a struggle, you need to balance it out- where can your child shine?
